Cleveland Clinic MD Says Daily Multi is a Must

So we were pleased to read that Mark Hyman, MD, Director of the prestigious Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine, wholeheartedly agrees. The Cleveland Clinic is an academic medical center and a leader in research, education and health information in Cleveland, Ohio. It is rated the second best hospital in the country by US News & World Report, and #1 for heart care. Dr. Hyman himself is well-known for his best-selling books and many appearances on public television. He has particular expertise in blood sugar regulation for weight loss and for preventing and treating diabetes.

A recent blog article written by Dr. Hyman could almost have been excerpted from one of Raymond’s books! He opens with this quote:

Even with a perfect diet, the combination of many things—including our depleted soils, the storage and transportation of our food, genetic alterations of traditional heirloom species, and the increased stress and nutritional demands resulting from a toxic environment—make it impossible for us to get the vitamins and minerals we need solely from the foods we eat. Simply put, the evidence shows we cannot get away from the need for nutritional supplements.

He continues:

Doctors used to think you got all your vitamins and minerals from food. . . . But the tide is shifting. . . . Emerging scientific evidence shows the importance of nutrients as essential helpers in our biochemistry and metabolism. They are the oil that greases the wheels of our metabolism, and large-scale deficiencies of nutrients in our population—including omega-3 fats [essential fatty acids], vitamin D, folate, zinc, magnesium and iron—have been well documented in extensive government-sponsored research. . . . everyone, at the very least, needs a good multivitamin, fish oil and vitamin D.

Most people, he says, will benefit from a probiotic as well, and he lists a number of additional supplements that help to support healthy blood sugar regulation.

In his article Dr. Hyman addresses why studies on supplements present conflicting results. His answer? Because these studies treat nutrients like drugs, while nutrients work as a team, together with additional nutrients and all the other factors that go into creating health. He also discusses the problem of finding truly high-quality supplements that use pure nutrients in the correct forms and avoid harmful additives, fillers, colors and allergens.

He could be singing from our songbook! These are the same issues Raymond has been educating the public about for the past thirty years, and the principles which drive Beyond Health.

With all the hogwash from “experts” like Dr. Paul Offit and others trying to make a name for themselves by supplement-bashing, it’s gratifying to find that prominent and respected medical professionals like Dr. Hyman agree with what Beyond Health is saying and doing.
